Lois Hughes

Lois Hughes is a former registered nurse originally from Edgefield, SC.  She has a love for painting dating back to her early childhood when her grandparents enrolled her in art classes believing her to be the next Vincent Van Gogh.

With no formal art education Lois continued to paint off and on throughout her life.  She has been a member of the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, Georgia in the past and studied under various artists there including Ed Rice, Pat McMahon and Cindy Epps.  She has also participated in portrait workshops with Karen Patton of the Karen Patton School of Fine Art in Kansas and with Karen Langley, professional artist in Columbia, SC.

Since retiring from nursing 10 years ago she has pursued her hobby in earnest.  She is presently a member of the Aiken Center for the Arts and the Aiken Artist Guild.  She has been taking advanced painting at USC Aiken under the guidance of Professor Al Beyer.  For several years she has been a contributing artist at the annual Undercover Artist Show in Augusta benefitting Walton Foundation's Camp TBI.

Although Lois explores several mediums her paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas and depict everyday life and include scenes from her many travels as well as local scenes.  She also does portraits of pets and people in acrylic or oil on canvas.
