Betsy Hughes
Betsy grew up in northwestern Pennsylvania where she learned from her very patient mother to use a needle and thread and a sewing machine. One of her favorite classes in school was Home Economics because she had the opportunity to sew her own aprons, skirts, and blouses. Betsy joined the local 4-H group where, again, she was able to create and learn more sewing skills.
As a young adult, Betsy worked full time in the medical field but also did tailoring and alterations for a local clothing store. She also designed and sewed bridal wear, men’s suits, and home décor.
Betsy later moved to the Pittsburgh, PA area and, aside from working in the corporate world, her interest in fabrics continued into fabric sculpting, primitive dolls, art dolls, felting, and art quilts. She later owned an antique/gift shop where she created and sold her dolls and quilts. Betsy and her husband moved to Aiken where she is continuing to pursue her fabric art.
Betsy has given talks and demonstrations at various groups and clubs and was featured in several local and national art publications. She has exhibited her fabric collaged art around the country and has won various awards. Betsy is a member of the Aiken Artist Guild, Aiken Center for the Arts, and North Augusta Cultural Arts Council.
