Barbara Stewart Smith

With over 50 years of painting and design experience, Barbara is a new member of the Aiken Artist Guild and a board member serving as Secretary. Having attended the school of Design, Art, and Architecture at the University of Cincinnati, and graduated from the Art Academy in the same city, Barbara spent over 40 years as a professional illustrator and designer. During her years as an editorial illustrator with Gannett, Inc., Barbara won over 20 Associated Press First Place awards, The Best of Gannett national competition, and First Place in the Society of Illustrators annual show. Barbara also served on the architectural planning committee of her hometown Fitton Creative Arts Center and as the inaugural President of the Artists' Collaborative at the Oxford Community Art Center in Oxford, Ohio.

Several years ago, Barbara returned to her first love, painting landscapes. Through traveling the southwest and developing a love of New Mexico, she developed a focus on southwestern scenes and the lives of the indigenous peoples. Most recently, she formed Blue Skye Studio in hopes of bringing together and supporting fellow artists in a brick and mortar environment.

Her devotion to her spiritual life heavily influences her subject matter and approach. Many of her paintings are found in the homes of collectors all over the United States and Europe.
