Living in Huntington NY, creating illustrated program covers for a neighborhood theater group, monthly calendar art for the Huntington Public Library, graphic designs for her parish church’s medieval festival, and seasonal cover illustrations for the NY region of the Porsche Club of America, were Marilyn’s early adventures in the production of art.
The Art League of Long Island NY offered life drawing workshops and Marilyn availed herself of these opportunities continually. Draftsmanship was important and this led to study the ultimate of all forms, the terrain of the human figure. “I thought if I could master that, I could approach landscapes, wildlife, and man-made structures too.”
Mainly focused on home, supporting her husband’s career, and raising their son, and at times caring for extended family, the opportunity for serious art study came later in life. Graphic design and advertising at SUNY’s Farmingdale campus opened the door to possibilities in art production. In the 1980’s life-drawing and illustration courses at Parsons School of Design, followed by earning her BFA in studio art with a minor in digital imaging in 1998 at Long Island University Old Brookville NY were Marilyn’s solid foundations.
“The move to Aiken SC was an adjustment for me for sure, but a town alive with culture, an equestrian community, and a university campus with a fine art program and impressive faculty, has provided me with welcome continuing education in life drawing and painting. My pen and brush will never retire.”
