Dr. Tom Mack to Speak at Aiken Artist Guild April 10 Meeting
Our next meeting will be Monday, April 10, at the Aiken Center for the Arts. Our featured guest speaker will be Dr. Tom Mack.
Dr. Mack holds the rank of USC Distinguished Professor Emeritus. During his 39 years on the faculty of the University of South Carolina Aiken, 25 of those years as chair of the English Department, he was frequently recognized for his teaching, scholarship, and public service. In 2008, the USC Board of Trustees awarded him the prestigious Carolina Trustee Professorship; and in 2014, he received the Governor’s Award in the Humanities. Dr. Mack remains active in retirement. He is the author of five books. He also continues to write his “Arts and Humanities” column, appearing each Friday in The Aiken Standard; and he now contributes two feature articles to each issue of Aiken Homes and Lifestyles magazine, one on a local artist and one on some aspect of local history. He also writes freelance museum and gallery reviews for Columbia’s news weekly Free Times. Besides serving on the board of SC Humanities, our state’s affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Mack chairs the board of governors of the South Carolina Academy of Authors, which manages the state’s literary hall of fame by hosting an induction weekend in a different city in the state each year.
Dr. Mack will be discussing significant works of public art in Aiken, ranging from the Hirsch mural in the federal courthouse to the Perry sculpture at USCA. We are very fortunate to have such a distinguished guest speaker.
Start to gather at 6:30 for refreshments and socializing. The business meeting will begin at 7:00 followed by Dr. Mack’s presentation. Don’t forget your nametag!
